The two revolutionist groups during the Russian Revolution were the Bolsheviks and the Mensheviks. The Mensheviks, which means "minority," wanted to implement communism in Russia, but believed in educating the population about communism. they believed that slow progress to gain popular support was best and were willing to compromise time for effectiveness. The Bolsheviks, which means "majority," wanted to implement communism in Russia, but believed in radical quick implementation without popular consent. Vladimir Lenin led the Bolsheviks and emerged as the dominant social revolutionary group. After the March Revolution and Lenin gained control, the country broke into a civil war. The White Army which was fighting to stop the rise of Lenin and the NSO. They received aid and money from the US and European nations to stop the rise of communism in Russia. The Red Army (Bolsheviks) were fighting to implement Lenin's communism, and were under the command of Trotsky. As the White army are closed on the Red army the Red army ended up executing the Romanov family during the early hours of July 17, 1918. Czar Nicholas II, his wife, children and servants were herded into the cellar of their prison house and executed. Liberation by the White Army was imminent and the Reds needed to get rid of the Czar and his family. In addition to the royal family, the execution included: their doctor, cook, valet, maid, and dog. 8 days after the execution, the town of Ekaterinburg was captured by the White Army. The Red Army was pushed back to Moscow but was eventually able to hold off and defeat the White Army. Lenin gained complete control over Russia and employed his New Economic System as well as the CHEKA (secret police).
